URA partners with young people to serve residents in old districts under the Community Service Partnership Scheme

The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) has partnered with seven tertiary institutions and social service organisations to bring love and care to the residents in old districts in the 2015/16 Community Service Partnership Scheme (CSPS), which is in its fourth year.

Through the collaboration with tertiary institutions and social service organisations, volunteer teams comprising URA colleagues and tertiary students have joined hands to serve the residents in the old districts under various programmes arranged by the social service organisations.  These programmes include academic support programme for the primary school students, health care programme for the elderly, interactive activities for the single-parent families, fun and care programme for the visually-impaired people and mentally-challenged people, caring programme for the people living in sub-divided units and the homeless, and the social integration programme for the ethnic minority. Since the launch of CSPS, some 4,700 service hours have been achieved by about 550 volunteers for nearly 1,200 residents in the old districts.

An appreciation ceremony of the CSPS was held today (5 March) at the Comix Home Base in Wan Chai to recognize the contribution of all volunteers. To tie in with the 15th Anniversary of the URA this year, a group of the grass-roots families from Central and Western district joined the volunteers to paint a 15-metre long mural painting with the theme of URA's 15th Anniversary.  The mural painting was designed by a group of design school students.

Wing Yin enjoyed the coloring of the mural painting and said: "This is my first time to make a mural painting and it amazed me. Working with others to finish the painting is definitely more satisfied than drawing only by myself."

Officiating at the appreciation ceremony, Non-Executive Director of the URA, Mr Edward Chow and Managing Director of the URA, Mr Daniel C Lam commended the selfless contribution of all participating volunteers for their community services and expressed gratitude for the support of partnering organisations.

"CSPS follows the URA's mission to serve those in need in old districts, while encouraging the young people to serve the community together with us. Looking forward, we will continue this meaningful scheme with the support of tertiary institutions and social service organisations, " said Mr Chow.

The partnering organisations for the four programmes under CSPS in this academic year were City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Caritas Mok Cheung Sui Kun Community Centre, SKH Holy Carpenter Church, NAAC and Wai Ji Christian Service.
