Urban decay is a perennial problem across Hong Kong and redevelopment alone is no longer the resolution of the problem. The success of urban renewal hinges very much upon building rehabilitation to prolong service life, thereby slowing down the pace of urban decay. The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) formulated a strategy in 2020 to promote the maintenance and improvement of individual buildings (Rehabilitation). This involves resources of monumental scale. A scientific and holistic approach that takes into consideration valid factors affecting every individual area’s or building’s suitability for Rehabilitation is necessary to ensure resources are invested where it is most needed with optimal outcomes. To deal with the enormity of data involved for the above is a formidable task. To overcome, URA developed an information system capable of processing and analyzing multiple layers of building related data from various sources for implementation of the strategy.
