Public open space at URA’s Kweilin Street project commemorates former New Asia College site
A new public open space is provided by the Lai Chi Kok Road/Kweilin Street and Yee Kuk Street project of the Urban Renewal Authority (URA), celebrating the historical connection of the New Asia College (NAC), which was located on this project site back in the 1950's.
Nos. 61 - 65 Kweilin Street were formerly campus of NAC. NAC now forms part of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The URA has given careful consideration to this unique cultural link during the design of this 580 square-metre public open space.
Speaking at the completion ceremony today (Friday), Chairman of the URA, Mr Victor So Hing-woh, said this redevelopment project has not only improved the living environment of affected residents, but also brought to the district a beautifully-landscaped and themed landmark, allowing the public to appreciate the unique spirits of NAC.
"The URA was determined to demonstrate the historical and spiritual significance of the College through a public open space in the new development. The design and layout of the public open space have also taken into consideration the relevant history and background of the College," he added.
The Kweilin Street Public Open Space entails a series of artifacts. A name tablet with the inscription "Former Site of New Asia College" by Sinologist Professor Jao Tsung-I is put on display, introducing the former function of the site. There is also a monolithic waterwall, of which the design is inspired by the College motto "Sincerity and Intelligence". An engraved panel reproducing the College emblem is also placed in front of the waterwall. Another plaque engraved with an old hand script of the College anthem by Mr Ch'ien Mu, who was the first College President, will also be exhibited. The historic text and inscription written by Professor Yu Ying-shih, one of NAC's first graduates, were also engraved on a Heritage Wall.
Mr So extended his heartfelt thanks to NAC of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Sham Shui Po District Council and project stakeholders for their support and cooperation in making possible the perpetuation of the "New Asia Spirit" through the public open space. Also officiating at the completion ceremony were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of New Asia College, CUHK, Mr Charles Leung Ying-wai, and the Chairman of Sham Shui Po District Council, Mr Jimmy Kwok Chun-wah.
The URA has commenced a total of 15 redevelopment projects in Sham Shui Po and implemented a number of building rehabilitation efforts in the district, benefitting some 400 residential blocks.
