URA and TWGHs’ 2nd Young Leaders Programme nurtures future leaders to promote urban renewal through creativity

The 2nd Young Leaders Programme jointly organised by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) for TWGHs’ secondary school students has concluded with success.  Students from six participating schools have adopted the insights they gained from the Programme to initiate creative proposals in promoting urban renewal, enhancing living environment of old districts while strengthening local characteristics.

The 10-month Young Leaders Programme was kicked off in June last year. The URA organised a series of activities including workshops, tours and school talks in order to develop the young people’s skills in leadership, interpersonal communication, problem-solving and project management while encouraging them to make concerted efforts in promoting urban renewal.

This year, the Programme focused on transfer of knowledge while realising creativity through a wide range of activities.  URA colleagues from different departments delivered school talks to share with the students their work experience and challenges of urban renewal.  Docent tours to URA projects were also organised to provide students with a deeper understanding on the issue of urban decay.

Apart from transferring knowledge and promoting understanding of urban renewal, the Programme this year also offered a platform for showcase of creativity.   Participating students carried out in-depth case studies and initiated creative promotion proposals which were shared with their fellow schoolmates in the Urban Renewal Day they organised in their own school in February.  In early March, the URA organised a Presentation Day where all participating students gathered to share their learning outcomes and creative ideas with each other.

Each participating school has chosen an Outstanding Leader to recognise their remarkable performance. One of the Outstanding Leaders, a student from TWGHs Lee Ching Dea Memorial College, Leung Hei-nok said: “Through the docent tours, I am able to understand the issue of urban decay and the importance of building rehabilitation, thus inspiring our formulation of a proposal to encourage owners to carry out building rehabilitation.  This is really a great learning opportunity for us to apply knowledge into practice.”

Another Outstanding Leader, a student from TWGHs Chen Zao Men College, Pun Hiu-lui said: “The Programme allows us to practise leadership skills in communications.  While working out our promotion proposal for Graham Market, we have learnt the skills in paying heed to others’ opinion, project management, as well as capital and manpower allocation.”

The scope of the Programme this year have also been expanded with the number of students increased from 60 to 87 while the participating TWGHs schools increased to six.  The newly joined schools included Chen Zao Men College and Lui Yun Choy Memorial College, while those participating for the second year included Chang Ming Thien College, Lee Ching Dea Memorial College, Wong Fut Nam College and Mrs. Wu York Yu Memorial College.  Further details of the activities and list of Outstanding Leaders are given at the Annex.
