The URA welcomes appointment of Ben Lui Sau-shun as Executive Director
The Urban Renewal Authority (URA) today (Friday) welcomes the government’s appointment of a veteran engineer Mr Ben Lui Sau-shun as Executive Director of the URA, who will succeed Mr Pius Cheng Kai-wah upon his retirement at the end of this month. The appointment will take effect on 1 January 2019 for a term of three years.
The Chairman of the URA, Mr Victor So Hing-woh, said, “Mr Lui possesses immense knowledge and experience in implementing development projects and facilities management, especially in promoting the application of sustainable building design in projects. Urban regeneration is indeed an important task with huge responsibility. On behalf of the URA Board, I look forward to having Mr Lui working closely with senior management and staff members of the URA in fostering a more integrated urban regeneration in a holistic way.”
Prior to joining the URA, Mr Lui was Vice President, Projects & Facilities (later retitled as Chief Project Development Officer) of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation from 2011 to 2017. He was Project Director of Kerry Development (China) Limited and Group Director of Projects of Shangri-La International Hotel Management Limited from 2006 to 2011.
Expressing his gratitude to the retiring Executive Director, Mr So said, “Mr Pius Cheng joined the URA as General Counsel in 2002 and has been appointed as Executive Director since 2014. During his service at the URA in the last decade or so, Mr Cheng has been committed to assisting the URA to implement the strategies and guidelines set out by the Urban Renewal Strategy, made invaluable contribution to devise implementation framework and details for a number of URA initiatives which include, among others, the Flat-for-Flat Scheme, the demand-led redevelopment project pilot scheme and the facilitating services pilot scheme.
In recent years, Pius has played a pivotal role in leading the Building Rehabilitation division, and through collaborating with other government departments, to formulate implementation details for various building rehabilitation new initiatives which include the Smart Tender Building Rehabilitation Facilitating Services, Operation Building Bright 2.0, Fire Safety Improvement Works Subsidy Scheme as well as the latest Lift Modernisation Subsidy Scheme, of which the preparation is underway. These are key initiatives to enhance building safety which in a way, slow down the aging of buildings and hence help addressing the growing problem of urban decay in Hong Kong. We thank Mr Cheng for his dedicated and distinguished service at the URA and wish him a happy retirement.”
