Light Show at Central Market brings festivity and vitality to the community
To create a community with local characteristics and increased vibrancy, the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) will perform its debut projection art mapping show entitled “Snowing Market Light Show@CONET” on the facade of the Central Market from today (7 December 2018) until 5 January 2019, bringing festivity to town during Christmas and New Year holidays through multimedia displays of the architectural features of the Central Market and Hong Kong cityscapes.
Co-organised by the URA and the Central and Western District Council, an opening ceremony was held last night (6 December) with Chairman of the URA, Mr Victor So Hing-woh; Chairman of the Central & Western District Council, Mr Yip Wing-shing; Vice-chairman of the Central and Western District Council, Chan Hok-fung and URA Board Member and Chairman of the URA Central and Western District Advisory Committee, Mr Edward Chow Kwong-fai as the officiating guests.
The 90-second light show, to be put on every night from 6pm to 11pm during the show period, will be looped on the building façade of Central Market facing Queen's Road Central. Setting against the night backdrop of the hustle and bustle of Central, the historic building will be enlivened by visual projections of the urban landscapes of Central Market and Hong Kong, alongside seasonal music, showcasing the local characteristics. Complemented by the snowfall projections in the 24-hour open public passageway at the 2/F of the building, the show promises an immersive experience for community members to enjoy.
The URA has commenced the preservation and revitalisation works for the Central Market since the handover of the site by the Government in October 2017. To maintain the vibrancy of the building, the URA completed last year the temporary beautification works of the 24-hour open public passageway, while a marquee depicting the proposed elevation design of the project was installed to give the general public an idea of the future appearance of the Central Market after revitalisation. During the construction, the URA has been making efforts to ensure the smooth operation of all facilities at the Central Market for continuous public enjoyment.
Under the place-making initiative named ‘CONET’ (which stands for Community, Open space and Network), the Central Market will link up with two other URA projects – ‘H6 CONET’ Community Space and the Peel Street/Graham Street Development Scheme – to revitalise the district through organising diverse activities in these public spaces such as art exhibitions, performances and other cultural activities for the enjoyment of the members of the local community.
