To foster youth development and strengthen community cohesion while bringing vibrancy to the Flower Market in Mong Kok, the GDCD Association and the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) are hosting the “Flower Market Festival: Coffee Blossoms” (the Event) on 3 and 4 January from 12nn to 7pm, in the open area outside the Mong Kok Stadium.  The Event marks Hong Kong’s first coffee fair themed around coffee and floral artistry in the Flower Market, featuring over a dozen popular local coffee and dessert brands.  More than 20 merchants from the Flower Market will offer shopping discounts, and exclusive “Flower Market Drip Coffee Bags” will be available during the Event.  These efforts aim to attract foot traffic and new customers to the Flower Market.  Through an integrated approach, the URA strives to create a better environment and high-quality urban spaces in the Flower Market area.  This initiative will also encourage diverse participation among stakeholders in the community, fostering bonding among residents and enhancing the business environment.   Consequently, the distinctive character of the Flower Market will be sustainably enhanced.

The launch ceremony for the Event was held this morning, officiated by Mr Clarence Leung, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs; the Hon Vincent Cheng, Chairman of the executive committee of the GDCD Association and Legislative Council member; Ar Donald Choi, Managing Director of the URA; Ms Allie Yim, Acting District Officer (Yau Tsim Mong); Mr Daniel Au, Chairman of the Area Committee (Yau Tsim Mong North); Mr Lai Wing-chun, Chairman of the Hong Kong Wholesale Florist Association; and Mr Wilfred Au, Executive Director (Commercial) of the URA.  Also in attendance were Legislative Councillors, including the Hon Shiu Ka-fai, the Hon Chan Hoi-yan, the Hon Chris Ip, and the Hon Aaron Bok also attended, along with various URA Board Members and other local stakeholders.

In his opening address, Mr Clarence Leung, Under Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs, highlighted that the Event exemplifies activities enriched by local character.  He noted that the Government has hosted numerous local events over the past year aimed at promoting community spirit and strengthening ties among residents.  He expressed appreciation for the ongoing efforts of the URA and the GDCD Association in organising various activities for the community.  He stated, “I hope this event, marking the New Year, can bring warmth to everyone, much like a cup of hot coffee.”

Launching the Flower Market Festival with Innovative Mix of Cultural Creativity and Local Economy

The Hon Vincent Cheng, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the GDCD Association, emphasised that Kowloon West is home to many neighbourhoods rich in history and culture, with the Flower Market serving as a key landmark in the area.  Advocating for the "Build the City” policy, he urged the authorities to integrate the distinctive features of local districts and revitalise the community through innovative thinking.  He described the Event as a dynamic fusion of youth development, creative culture, and local economic growth — serving as a shining example of inclusive community engagement and a practical exercise in “micro-renewal” and “neighbourhood transformation”.  He also expressed gratitude to the URA, participating Flower Market merchants, and the Yau Tsim Mong District Office, the District Council and North Area Committee, for their collaborative efforts in rejuvenating the area.

Ar Donald Choi, Managing Director of the URA, noted that the Sai Yee Street / Flower Market Road Development Scheme (the Project) has taken into account the development needs of the Flower Market.  During the advancement of the Project, the URA has been actively supporting the operation and Flower Market.  Through improved built environment brought about by urban renewal, the URA aims to provide citizens with a better urban living space.  Instead of harming the Flower Market, the Project will create momentum to strengthen the area, enabling it to thrive even more.

The URA has organised a variety of festive activities in the Flower Market since the Project commenced.  Alongside the installation of lighting and festive decorations, these efforts aim to increase foot traffic and enhance the overall ambience.  The “Flower Market Festival: Coffee Blossoms” specifically seeks to attract citizens who may not often visit the Flower Market, encouraging them to purchase flowers and bringing in new customers.

The URA has planned to offer interim operation and relocation arrangements for florists affected by the redevelopment project.  This includes designating ample transitional operating space within the Project area to group together these scattered florists, thereby creating a market-like atmosphere.

“This new business space will serve as an ‘experimental ground’ for the development of the Flower Market, allowing exploration of ways to expand the flower-related business chain.  Merchants will have the opportunity to collaboratively explore and realise business prospects that reinforce the Flower Market’s character and promote its long-term development.”  Choi said.

The URA will provide street-level retail spaces in the proposed complex building of the Project for florists to relocate back after the Project’s completion. This will enable the florists to apply the experience gained from the “experimental ground”.

Choi added that, with consideration for the long-term development of the Flower Market, the URA has commissioned a community-making consultant to bring together various stakeholders in the area, encourage them to collaborate in organising activities.  It is hoped that, in the long run, they will be able to self-initiate and drive independently the rejuvenation and sustainable development of the Flower Market.

Organised by the GDCD Association and co-organised and sponsored by the URA, the Event is supported by the Yau Tsim Mong District Office, the District Council, and the North Area Committee.  This two-day event offers free entry to the public and features a diverse array of activities, including 15 booths showcasing offering such as coffee and tea stalls, ethnic Henna body art, and blue-and-white porcelain vases crafted in collaboration with local kindergarten students.  Each booth will present unique exclusive experiences, including floral-themed food and drinks.  Participants can purchase a specially designed tasting cup for HK$50 to sample a variety of coffees.

Two Days of Activities Enjoying the Delights of Floral and Coffee Aromas

Multiple promotions are also availbale at the Event for the public.  Citizens can participate in various floral and eco-workshops at discounted rates.  Upon entry, they can also enjoy a gift-draw to win prizes offered by market merchants (while supplies last).  Additionally, participants can join the “Flower Market Big Step” game by taking photos at three designated check-in points around the Flower Market and uploading them to social media to receive a limited-edition Flower Market Festival tote bag.

Furthermore, visitors can take part in an online game at the venue.  By answering four questions correctly after watching a short video related to the Project, they will receive a HK$50 “Flower Market e-Voucher” for use at selected merchants in the Flower Market (limited quantity, first-come, first-served).

The Event features a “Blessing Corner”, inviting visitors to share their new year wishes for Hong Kong or for friends and loved ones.  There is also a “Chill Out” zone where visitors can enjoy coffee or tea at camping tables and benches, along with live performances by local young buskers at specific times, providing a relaxed weekend atmosphere in the vicinity of the Flower Market.
